The Philippines comprise more than 7, 000 islands, 79 provinces and 117 charted cities. As a vacation destination, the archipelago-the second largest in the world-draws divers and surfers, beach-goers and eco-tourists, spa-seekers and chic shoppers alike. The abundant coral reefs surrounding the islands make the beaches and coastal areas prime destinations for divers. If you have an interest in the nation’s storied history, don’t miss the sights of the Philippines' ancient cities.

Cebu

Cebu is the name of both a city and an island-province. It is a popular destination for both domestic and international travelers, loved for its long white beaches, clear waters and lush mountainous interior. Cebu City provides all the amenities of a major metropolis within these stunning surroundings. Bustling beach resorts abound throughout the province, so if you’re looking for plentiful tourist services and amenities Cebu is an excellent choice.

Luzon Province

The most famous sites in Luzon Province are the Banaue Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rice Terraces are a marvel of both engineering and nature, constructed by hand by the Ifugao people over 2, 000 years ago. Passed down through generations, the rice and vegetable paddies covering over 4, 000 square miles of mountainsides are maintained by the whole community and naturally irrigated by rain forests, streams and springs. Hiking trails allow tourists to explore the landscape. On a hot day, head for the Tappiya Waterfalls which provide a large pool for swimming.

Vigan

Vigan was at one time a royal city and the oldest Spanish settlement in the Philippines. Here you have the opportunity to sleep in World Heritage-listed stone houses in the historic heart of Vigan, some of which have been converted into inns. The city’s many 18th century colonial buildings are well-preserved. Stroll around the streets and plazas of Vigan and you’ll see architectural styles reminiscent of both China and Europe.

Batangas

The major attraction in Batangas is Taal Volcano, the smallest active volcano in the world according to the Philippines Department of Tourism. A remarkable landmark, Taal Volcano is an island in Lake Taal, a body of water collected within an ancient volcanic caldera. Because of this, Taal Volcano is often referred to as “a volcano within a volcano.” Take a boat trip across the lake to the island, then hike or take a horseback ride to the summit and back. Be aware that the volcano is active.

Palawan

Palawan, an island-province, is an ideal destination in the Philippines for nature lovers and diving enthusiasts. Palawan Island and the smaller islands that make up the province boast over 1, 000 miles of coastline with protected coral reefs teeming with tropical wildlife. The waters are one of the few places on earth where you can see the endangered dugong, or sea cow. Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is home to marine turtles, tiger and hammerhead sharks, dolphins, manta rays and almost 500 fish species. On land, native species like the bearcat and mousedeer mingle with zebras, giraffes and other animals introduced from Africa at Calauit Island Wildlife Sanctuary. Don't miss a trip to Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Here, you can explore an extraordinary landscape of limestone karsts, caves and rivers, stalactites and stalagmites from the mountaintops to the sea.
